Brain Gains

The National documentary on physical activity and how it positively impacts on student achievement. The key is getting kids motivated to engage in physical exercise. Click on the link above!

"If you want your child to have healthy habits, practice healthy habits, too. Because you're your child's best role model."

I took this from a blog called the whole child. The link may be found when you click on the title of this post. The author provides some great ideas on eating healthy with your children and includes some great links to support your healthy eating venture. Enjoy!

If anyone has been to California, they have probably seen the fast food chain Carl's Jr. I absolutely love it, knowing the food is not very healthy. The fresh guacamole with all meals is fantastic, but with 920 calories and 59 grams of fat, 23 grams of which are saturated in this burger, who really needs this in them?

Great idea for a healthy meal. It is all about calories and vitamins. This meal has it all !

I really enjoyed reading the tips provided by this blog author on remaining aware. Simple points yet how many of us practice them?

In a DIgital Future, Textbooks are history (NYTimes)

Is this possibly the future? Good New York Times
article on how technology is changing education.

This is a great follow up article to the Time magazine article on exercise. Foods that help you remain lean. Nutrition is a huge component and greatly neglected area of a training program.

Interesting article on why exercise may be detrimental to most individuals' attempt to loose weght. Some great research compiled for this viewpoint. I don't fully agree, but it is quite interesting.
They make some interesting points about exercise and children.

Enjoy!

Personality What makes you the way you are by Daniel Nettle

Posted by Mark

Book I am currently reading about personalities and how we differ. Many insights into how to better understand children as well through their personality differnces and how this affects learning.

I really enjoyed this excerpt from page 42.

"Work is a major domain where mildly low Conscienstiousness has an impact. Conscientiousness is the most reliable personality predictor of occupational success across the board. In general, the higher Conscientiousness score you have, the better you will do, other things being equal. "

Reviewing Cathy Vatterott’s “Rethinking Homework”

Posted by Mark

Nice review of a great book regarding Homework. Many questions parents have regarding homework are answered in the review of this book.

Very interesting study on Chinese and American adolescent academic motivation. Both decline in 7th and 8th grade.

Interesting sentence:

As the quality of Chinese children's motivational beliefs deteriorates, they may come to experience their engagement in schoolwork as not only tedious but also pressured, which may cause emotional problems".

Interesting research on high-fat, high sugar foods.

I liked this paragraph most.

"The new findings suggest that overconsumption of highly palatable foods maintains bingeing by enhancing opioids in the brain, and that increased opioids could be a factor involved in binge eating disorders. These findings may help to understand the biological basis of eating disorders."

Inflamatory Bowel Disease up by 50 percent according to new study.

Interesting study that finds kids from less affluent neighbourhoods to be better prepared for school than their counterparts.

I was in the process of doing a google search and came across a great Toronto Star article with many useful links for parents who have children in camps with a concern about the ongoing swine flu outrage.
